Chapter 9

Hannah was learning to live without real sleep. Soon, if she wanted to be any help to her daughter, she would have to resort to taking a drugstore aid. She remembered now that when Amanda had undergone fertility treatment, she had been afraid to add sedatives or sleeping pills to the mix of hormones and drugs already in her system. So she had gone to the local health food store for tea and vitamin supplements. Hannah resolved to ask Amanda about it during their next phone call.

But tea and supplements would not bring back her daughter.

After what seemed like hours of staring at the ceiling she rose and went into the bathroom. The motel was clean, but the walls were paper-thin. Over the din of a noisy air conditioner she could hear the television coming from the room to the north. Now, as she ran the tap to fill a glass of water, she was surprised to hear a voice from Quinn’s room, too.

At first she thought she was listening to his television, then she realized she was listening to Quinn himself. She turned off the tap, wondering whom he was talking to.

“Well, I’m glad you finally got home. Enjoying my car?”

In the bathroom the words were as clear as Port Franklin’s air, although she knew that back in her room they would have been a faint rumble.

There was a pause, then: “Well, that’s why I’m calling. I want you to park the Lexus in your garage and leave it there.” Pause. “No, I’m not kidding. Rent something, Jake. I’ll pay you back. But I checked my voice mail a little while ago, and there’s a threatening message from the Port Franklin cops. Chandler himself, in fact.”

Hannah lowered herself to the edge of the tub so she was even closer to the wall that separated them.

Quinn continued. “He wants to talk to me. He’s obviously suspicious. Hannah disappears on foot half a mile from my house, and an hour later I suddenly leave town. By now Chandler may even realize what I do for a living. Hannah has trouble believing I don’t want to do an article about this. Maybe he does, too.”

Hannah closed her eyes. At no point along the way had she really considered that helping her might hurt Quinn.

“So, park the car,” Quinn continued from the other room. “Rent anything you want. I’m good for it. But if someone does trace the car to you, tell them I asked you to lend me your van so I could do some camping, and we switched. Don’t admit to seeing Hannah with me.”

There was silence, then a humorless laugh from the other room. “Camping, Jake? You know, when you go out in the woods and sleep in a tent?”

She listened to the rest of the short conversation. Quinn quizzed Jake about the database search. From Quinn’s side of the conversation it sounded as if little progress had been made.

“Keep trying,” Quinn told him. “And see what you can do here in West Virginia.
